What is Discord and why Discord?


Discord is a widely-used instant messaging and social platform which allows communication through voice calls, video calls, text messaging, and media. Discord offers several benefits for a community of young scientists - real-time collaboration and discussions through seamless communication, constant engagement via announcements channels, and ease of accessibility.


A Discord space will enable us, the magnetics community, to gather and connect with each other on the go. Expect events and activities, such as the SiM’s trademark Virtual Coffee Hours to be hosted on this SiM Discord Space. The SiM Forums, including conference-specific forums, will also be hosted on SiM Discord to provide you with more seamless access to communicating with your fellow conference goers.

Purpose of Access

I acknowledge the following:

  • This Discord space is under beta testing. Please provide feedback where necessary.

  • Please allow the Admin a 48 hour period to process this access request. Once accepted, an invite will be sent to your provided mailbox.

By accessing the SiM Discord space, all users agree to the following usage guidelines, rules, and regulations:
 

  1. Be Respectful: Treat fellow users with kindness, respect, and empathy. Harassment, hate speech, discrimination, or any form of bullying will not be tolerated.
     

  2. Identity: Your display name in the SiM Discord space should be your real name for professional purposes.
     

  3. Keep it Civil: Engage in constructive and courteous discussions. Disagreements are natural, but please express your opinions in a respectful manner.
     

  4. Stay Relevant: Keep your posts related to magnetism or research related topics of interest. Off-topic discussions should be taken to appropriate channels.
     

  5. Protect Personal Information: Be cautious about sharing sensitive personal information publicly. Use private messaging for exchanging contact details or sensitive information. SiM and the IEEE Magnetics Society will not be liable for any for the loss of shared personal information on this space.
     

  6. Disclaimer: This Discord is not actively moderated. SiM reserves the right to remove any content or user deemed inappropriate without prior notice. By participating in this Discord space, you acknowledge that SiM, IEEE Magnetics Society, and the respective conferences are not liable for any interactions, disputes, or consequences arising from connections made here. Users are responsible for their own actions and interactions.
     

  7. Report Concerns: If you encounter any inappropriate behavior, harassment, or content that violates these rules, please report it to Admins immediately. You can also email Admins via SiM@ieeemagnetics.org for any inquiries or concerns related to the Discord space. 
     

  8. Enforcement: Repeated violations of the server's rules or guidelines can lead to warnings, temporary suspension, or even expulsion from the server. Admins have the authority to enforce these actions to maintain a respectful and productive environment.
